Recap: The Craft of Contemporary Collage

The public’s interest in the year’s first MCAD Platforms event, Craft of Contemporary Collage, resulted in a diverse group of participants who were re-introduced to the art form through  a lecture and a hands-on workshop facilitated by two established visual artists, Gary Ross Pastrana and Kaloy Olavides, both alumni of the University of the Philippines- Diliman and recipients of the 13 Artist Awards of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

The workshop took off with an introduction to the fine art of collage, a technique of art creation which involves an assemblage of  different forms to create a whole. The concept was further elaborated with the two sharing their artistic processes, choice of materials and subject matter. Gary, who is a conceptual artist and a curator, and who is known for his collages and sculptural installations shared samples of his works to point out some useful techniques in selecting imagery from found objects. On the other hand, Kaloy, a multi-awarded visual artist and a lecturer at the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde presented previous works to point out approaches in constructing imagery through the use of pattern and repetition.

To make practical use of their learning, participants were challenged to create their own collage throughout the entire workshop by using old magazine pages, adhesives and boards. Apart from individual artworks, the participants were also encouraged to work on a collaborative piece by attaching an image or two that they have chosen to the board provided.

MCAD Platforms

Is an alternative avenue for engagement that is independent of the museum’s exhibition and current programming on Learning. It seeks to widen the reach of  MCAD’s audiences to promote contemporary art and design through workshops, lectures, and events for a wide range of demographic.
