Among the many first impressions Michael Lin encountered during his first visit to Manila, he saw a pedicab and rode one on his way to MCAD. The Filipino pedicab is a small type of local transportation meant for shorter distances. It is a three-wheeled, human-powered mechanical vehicle made up of a bicycle attached to a sidecar. His interest in inclusive mobility in cities and in biking culture led to a meeting with some pedicab drivers in Estrada St. during his second visit to Manila in which he learned about their routes, the anatomy of the pedicab and their designs, and the day in the life of a driver, among other things. This information will feed into future projects.

 

 

Of his past projects, audiences were given an overview of his body of work in a public talk held at Toby’s Estate located in White Space in Makati on Dec 11. Lin spoke of his collaboration with Tokyo-based architecture firm Atelier Bow Wow and reconfiguring and reimagining of spaces such as that of the Rockbund Art Museum and Vancouver Art Gallery through his works.

 



 

In between the meeting with pedicab drivers and the public talk, Michael took time out to visit Bellas Artes Projects in Bagac, Bataan to see the different workshops ongoing there. This visit is a beginning of an artist’s residency in Bataan which will offer artists space and access to resources from Bellas Artes Projects Inc in partnership with the DLS-CSB‘s Museum of Contemporary Art and Design to foster new and exciting projects.
